The Title IX Compliance & Discrimination and Harassment Prevention Office (Title IX/DHP Office) provides a variety of standard and customized training programs to help faculty, staff, and students understand, prevent and respond to discrimination, harassment, and equity in work and academic environments. We highlight the latest campus and systemwide trends and provide information related to relevant policies and procedures regarding discrimination and harassment.
The training workshops offered by the Title IX/DHP Office are available to all campus members and departments.
Training & Education
MANDATORY TRAINING
All members of the UC community—students, staff, and faculty—are required to regularly complete sexual harassment and sexual violence prevention training. These training assignments are designed to comply with state, federal, and UC requirements.
Employee Training
Supervisors and faculty are required to take the “UC Sexual Violence and Harassment, Anti-Discrimination, Prevention and Education (SHAPE) Training for Supervisors, MSP, and Faculty” training on sexual violence and sexual harassment prevention every two years. This two-hour online course includes information about the SVSH Policy (including definitions of Prohibited Conduct), reporting requirements for Responsible Employees, and campus resources. This course also meets state training requirements for supervisors.
- UC Sexual Violence and Harassment, Anti-Discrimination, Prevention and Education (SHAPE) Training for Supervisors, MSP, and Faculty (AB1825) – This training, offered in the UC Learning Center, is for supervisors, MSP employees, and faculty at all UC locations, and provides an overview of how to prevent sexual violence and sexual harassment in the University of California. It educates participants on recognizing sexual harassment, sexual violence, and other prohibited behavior; preventing harm before, during, and after incidents; identifying requirements and processes for reporting; identifying resources, including confidential ones, and requesting assistance to help navigate response processes; and reviewing supervisor roles and responsibilities. Additional supplemental information about discrimination and harassment as it relates to the UC Anti-Discrimination Policy is also included.
Non-supervisory staff, including student employees who are in non-supervisory staff roles, are required to take the “UC Sexual Violence and Harassment, Anti-Discrimination, Prevention and Education (SHAPE) Training for Non-Supervisors” training on sexual violence and sexual harassment prevention annually. The one-hour online course includes information about the SVSH Policy (including definitions of Prohibited Conduct), reporting requirements for Responsible Employees, and campus resources.
- UC Sexual Violence and Harassment, Anti-Discrimination, Prevention and Education (SHAPE) Training for Non-Supervisors – This training, offered in the UC Learning Center, is for non-supervisory employees at all UC locations. The course provides an overview of how to prevent sexual violence and sexual harassment in the University of California. Participants are educated on how to recognize sexual harassment, sexual violence, and other prohibited behavior; prevent harm before, during, and after incidents; identify requirements and processes for reporting; and identify resources, including confidential ones, and request assistance to help navigate response processes. Additional supplemental information about discrimination and harassment as it relates to the UC Anti-Discrimination Policy is also included.
Student Training
All students are required to complete the “UC Sexual Violence and Harassment, Anti-Discrimination, Prevention and Education (SHAPE) Training for Students” course on sexual violence and sexual harassment prevention training every year. The online course includes information about the SVSH Policy (including definitions of Prohibited Conduct), bystander intervention, potential response processes, and campus resources.
- UC Sexual Violence and Harassment, Anti-Discrimination, Prevention and Education (SHAPE) Training for Students – This online course, offered in Canvas, is for all undergraduate and graduate students at the University of California. It includes information on how to recognize sexual violence, sexual harassment, and other prohibited behavior; how to prevent harm before, during, and after incidents; how to make a report; and how to identify resources, including confidential ones. Additional supplemental information about discrimination and harassment as it relates to the UC Anti-Discrimination Policy is also included.
Incoming undergraduate students (new freshmen, transfer students, and Education Abroad Program reciprocity students) are also required to complete “Gaucho FYI,” an educational workshop upon arrival at UCSB. This educational Zoom webinar is led by a professional staff member and a trained peer presenter, and has been developed to introduce new students to a variety of health and safety topics, including sexual violence and sexual harassment prevention. The webinar must be completed during the first three weeks of fall quarter.
Students who are also employees must complete both the SHAPE student training in Canvas and the appropriate SHAPE employee in the UC Learning Center to fulfill systemwide and California state training requirements.
OTHER MANDATORY TRAININGS
- Student-athletes, coaches, and Inter-Collegiate Athletics (ICA) staff are required to take the “NCAA Sexual Violence Prevention” training annually. This online course includes information about sexual violence prevention, intervention, and response.

Each year, 90% of all members of each organization are required to complete “Interpersonal Violence Prevention” education, a peer-led curriculum informed by and created in partnership between Student Engagement & Leadership (SEAL) and the CARE Office.
